Chapelle de Saint Jean

Chapelle de Saint Jean

Located on the col, it is the “sanctus johannis de Pinaudeyeno” chapel reported in the 14th century.

Built by the Knights Hospitaller of Saint John of Jerusalem established on the col in the early 13th century, it was then destroyed during religious wars in 1574.
However, it was used during the 16th century for the burials of the neighbourhood deceased ones at the cemetery.
Restored in 1644 by the Hospitallers, it was still in service at the end of the 18th century.

Basic building, barrel vaulted, it is intriguing because of its radiating chapel, rounded on the outside, flat on the inside, reducing the sanctuary surface.

The Saint Jean chapel is an introduction to the fascinating history of the col and Montclar.
