Located on the right bank of the Durance river. In the Middle Age, the village set up next to Saint-Jean hillside. Nowadays Château-Arnoux-Saint-Auban is the fifth most important city in the area with more than 5,500 inhabitants.
The Tour of the Lake is a 10km walk full of rest and freshness, it’s also an important ornithologic site. In Château-Arnoux, you can enjoy the castle park and its bridle path. Crossed by a bridle path leading to the former stables and the castle, the castle’s park which is listed as a “Natural Site and Monument” is being restored. The park gathers around 150 species of trees and shrubs.
Certain parts of the walk are wheelchair accessible, and there is a leaflet available that describes the different types of trees and birds. The ornithology fanatics can watch about 140 bird species on the lake banks, 2 hours by walk, accessible for everyone. Bring your binoculars !
Every Sunday morning, an important traditional market takes place in Saint-Auban and there is a covered Bio market at Chateau-Arnoux every Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm.
The St Jean Chapel, great point of view on the Valley
The Chapel at 665 meters of height can be reached from the tourist office by a pedestrian path or by car. St John the Baptist’s Chapel, which was built in 1667, was recently restored. The internationally renowned artist Bernar Venet, who was born in the region made the contemporary furniture. Open every Wednesday from 4.00 pm to 7.00 pm in July and August.
Castle’s Park
We offer to discover the mysteries of the village, the prestigious castle built by Pierre de Glandevès between 1510 and 1530, the snail (spiral straircase), the neighboring park, heaven of peace and greenery going to the Ferme de Font-Robert (ancient 16th century farm of the castle).
