In Barles, the first church was located in the hamlet named “le château”. It was dedicated to Our Lady and was in a castrum built in the 13th century.
It would eventually fall into ruins and the parishioners had to fall back on the St Pierre chapel. That one, mentioned in 1351 with a chaplain, is said to be parochial in 1677 and the parish priest of Notre Dame did his curacies there because “his church was in ruins”.
It was in all likelihood that this church was older than the castrum. In an open field, without fortifications, it could have been built during the 11th century and Carolingian times. It is surrounded by a cemetery. The bishop comes to visit in 1683 and describes the painting of the main altar representing a crucifixion. In the rosary chapel, he notices a painting showing the Virgin Mary surrounded by Saint Dominic, Sainte Catherine of Siena and the fifteen mysteries. The church then lost its parish status when a new church was built in the village in 1853.
