Eglise Saint Pierre à la Chapelle

The first known place of worship was mentioned in 1351 with “ecclesia de monteclaro” served by a chaplain. It was dedicated to Saint Michael and located on the same site as for the castrum and the first castle.

During the early 16th century depopulation and following the damages caused by wars of religion, the castrum was abandoned. The community built in 1555, a church dedicated to Saint Peter, to the south, below the old village in the hamlet of “Le Vallon” later called “La Chapelle”.
At this time, a chapel was maybe already there and had been restored and extended, and again in 1602.
Since then, Saint Pierre became the parish, but the bishop wanted to reestablish the former parish for patron saint Michael. This was done in 1645 in the Serre-Nauzet area despite the opposition of Le Vallon’s inhabitants and surrounding hamlets.
The ruins of the castrum chapel seem to have subsisted for a long time since in the studies on places of worship in 1868 and 1899, the chapelle de la Salette is said to be built on vestiges of an old parish.
