Eglise Paroissiale Sainte Marthe du Haut Chardavon

Eglise Paroissiale Sainte Marthe du Haut Chardavon

In the early 15th century, Chardavon probably already had a chapel big enough to fit all villagers on some feast days.

Did it succeed another older building erected by monks coming from another Chardavon located near Sisteron, known since the 11th century and where the religious had already settled at this time ? Perhaps, this is an hypothesis which would explain this toponym and justify Seyne paying for a long time this faraway monastery a licence fee. Damaged by protestants, the church was rebuilt in 1622 and 1635. In 1690 it became a daughter church and a priest settled in. However, bad maintenance caused it to deteriorate and the bell tower collapsed in 1717, making a hole in the vault. It was rebuilt and then restored again in 1783.

To discover : The walnut wood altar that an inspired Chardavon inhabitant saved from the repeated destruction during the french revolution by claiming it for Chardavon when it was in the Trinitarian chapel located in the current middle school in Seyne.
