At the heart of Plateau Valensole, Riez is built on the hillside overlooking Saint Maxime the confluence of three valleys. These have been used by communication channels in the High Roman Empire. At this junction of roads from Aix and Frejus, the Emperor Augustus founded the colony of Roman law: Colonia Julia Augusta Reiorum Appolinaris. Four monolithic granite columns surmounted by a carved architrave, are the remains of a temple in the 1st century AD. On the ruins of Roman baths, a baptistery and cathedral are high during the fifth century. The Baptistery remains one of the few early Christian buildings in Provence. Its function is then bishop of Riez an important city.
